Introduction
The German Academy for Aviation and Travel Medicine was established in 1991 as a non-profit enterprise of Lufthansa German Airlines and the German Society for Aerospace Medicine. In May 2016, the German Society of Aviation and Aerospace Medicine took over the corporate shares of Lufthansa German Airlines, making it the sole shareholder of the European School of Aviation Medicine.
In 2007 the Germany Academy for Aviation and Travel Medicine established the EUROPEAN SCHOOL OF AVIATION MEDICINE (EUSAM) to provide training in aviation medicine in English language.
EUSAM provides:
- Training courses for medical doctors to become authorized aeromedical examiners in JAA/EASA member states,
- Diploma courses for aviation and travel medicine,
- Refresher Course (in German language) for AMEs class 1 and 2,

Science Award
Annually a 10,000 Euro Science Award, endowed by the German Academy for Aviation and Travel Medicine, is presented to a young scientist for outstanding scientific work in the area of aviation and travel medicine. Each year the Academy promotes non-profit research projects in this area depending on the financial resources.

The members of the of the German Academy for Aviation and Travel Medicine are leading academic teachers in the fields of Ophthalmology, Physiology, Cardiology, Occupational Medicine, Neurology, Otorhinolaryngology, Tropical and Travel Medicine. It selects the laureates of the awards, the research projects to be promoted and those receiving the scholarships.
Scholarship
Finally the European School of Aviation Medicine donates two Scholarships every year for participation in the Basic and Advanced Course in Aviation Medicine.
